The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is GS PAPER - II of the UPSC CSE Prelims Exam. Introduced in 2011, CSAT acts as a qualifying exam, which means that securing a minimum score (currently 33% i.e. 67 marks) is a must to qualify for the UPSC Mains. It's designed to evaluate applicants’ suitability for various administrative roles by testing their comprehension of complex data, reasoning, decision-making, problem-solving, cognitive, and analytical skills.
In general, it does not contribute to your final ranking but if you achieve a score above the cutoff in the GS Paper 1 of the UPSC Prelims, and fail the CSAT paper, it will result in the rejection of your application. This underscores the critical importance of the CSAT. Therefore, adhering to a strategic and proven preparation plan for the UPSC CSAT is vital to ensure you pass the test effortlessly.
Let's look at the format of the UPSC CSAT Paper II questions in the past 10 years. This trend analysis will help candidates understand the weights given to each portion of the question paper by offering an understanding of the breakdown of marks allotted to each.

We can examine how the marks are allocated to the various exam sections each year by examining the data. For instance, in comparison to logical and analytical reasoning, reading comprehension received greater marks in 2014. Every year, this pattern varies, hinting that certain areas can get harder or more important. As an example, there were greater marks for Data Interpretation in 2018 compared to 2020. Using these trends as a guide, candidates can determine which topics require more attention throughout their preparation.
Reading Comprehension: This section consistently has high values over the years. 30 questions are asked annually on average, which emphasizes how crucial it is to focus well to qualify for the CSAT cutoff.
Logical & Analytical Reasoning: It shows fluctuations but remains significant.
Basic Numeracy & Maths: The trend is relatively stable.
Decision Making: Had no value in previous years, but has received no questions since 2014, except for 2021 and 2022; questions may be asked in the future.
Data Interpretation: "Even though the "Data Interpretation" section had zero questions or marks for most of the exam, this does not mean that candidates won't be tested on data interpretation in the future."
This data provides insights into the weightage of different sections in UPSC CSAT Paper II over time, which can be valuable for exam preparation.
Study Examination Patterns & Analyze The Past Papers
Study the previous question papers and make a list of questions that are frequently asked every year. It helps you to mark your weak areas and create a strategy according to your strengths and weaknesses.
Understand The Syllabus
Firstly, for accurate details, thoroughly review the UPSC syllabus, which is readily available on the Union Public Service Commission website, and familiarize yourself with the syllabus with the revision multiple times.
Solve Mock Tests And Test Series
Do a self-assessment by attempting last year's CSAT paper: Take a previous year's CSAT paper and attempt it under timed conditions. This will give you an idea of where you stand vis a vis in the CSAT paper.
Consistently practice PYQs, mock tests, and test series to assess your readiness and refine your time management abilities. Evaluate your performance, pinpoint areas needing improvement, and dedicate effort to strengthening them. These papers not only cultivate an exam-focused mindset but also boost your confidence. Regular or weekly practice will foster productivity, speed, and precision, while also providing a realistic exam atmosphere.
Identify Strengths And Weaknesses
Examine previous year’s patterns to determine your advantages and disadvantages in each CSAT segment. Make a note of your areas of weakness and concentrate on strengthening them. To rapidly improve your weakest areas, get practice questions on particular topics.
Identify Your Mistakes And Categorize Them For Better Understanding
Factual - knowledge gaps requiring a revisiting of source material
Conceptual - lack of revision or understanding
Silly mistake- careless reading or marking
Comprehension
Previous years' question counts have varied from 28 to 30 (35% to 40% of the paper). It is therefore even more crucial to comprehend the chapter in its whole and to answer the questions in an organised way.
This topic/section examines your vocabulary, grammar, and understanding of English text. Regular reading dramatically helps improve all three. Consider reading high-quality newspapers, magazines, and books. Practice English usage and comprehension questions from past year papers or mock tests. Books like Wren & Martin's 'High School English Grammar and Composition' will help to refine your grammar skills - Recommended books “The Hindu Newspaper” & “Wrenn Martin's English Grammar and Composition”
Review And Revision
Allocate time for regular revision of the topics you have covered. Reviewing and revising the concepts will reinforce your understanding and improve retention. Create concise notes and flashcards to aid in quick revision before the exam.
Mentor And Faculty Guidance
Every year, CSAT gets harder and harder for students to perform on. Not only are students with backgrounds in the arts and commerce experiencing difficulties, but students with degrees in engineering or medical are also facing difficulty in receiving the required marks. This makes it quite obvious that UPSC expects applicants to work hard on CSAT rather than ignore it as in the past.
While CSAT is qualifying, remember that your focus would be on General Studies (GS) preparation in the long run, but you should also aim for a decent score in CSAT (around 33%) to ensure you clear the cut-off and move on to the Mains Exam. Make sure you devote enough time to CSAT preparation while preparing for Prelims.
Even though CSAT may indeed be getting more challenging over time, a combination of effective preparation, test-taking strategies, and focused study can empower aspirants to achieve high scores and excel in the exam.
